Adler Center For Special Needs


Part-Time starting Fall 2018

The Mid-Island Y JCC in Plainview, NY, is looking for high-energy, creative, responsible adults for our Second Home Daycare program to work in our self-contained classroom and inclusion programs. Experience working with children with special needs in a camp or school setting is a must.

Hours: Afternoons, Monday-Friday. Schedules are flexible and conducive to college and graduate student schedules.

Office & Administration



The Evening Welcome Desk Receptionist is the first staff person that members and guests see when they enter the Mid-Island Y JCC. This position requires strong interpersonal skills, computer skills, as well as the ability to handle multiple tasks at once.

Essential Position Duties

  • Greet and acknowledge members, guests and visitors of the MIYJCC

  • Answer guest inquiries, and direct them as appropriate

  • Assist new members in filling out applications and paperwork

  • Administer membership card ID

  • Implement front desk processes and procedures

  • Write all receipts for programs, classes, etc.

  • Take contributions

  • Keep a clean and neat work environment

  • Replace forms, flyers and membership folders when necessary

  • Knowledgeable of current & ongoing programs and events


Education related to service/management and/or 2-3 years office experience.

General Skills

  • Basic computer skills:  Microsoft Office applications, including Word and Excel

  • Must be organized and able to manage and prioritize multiple tasks, meet deadlines and manage time

  • Must be able to work as a part of a team

  • Must be able to manage conflict situations

  • Must be able to take initiative to solve problems and be willing to seek assistance in solving problems

  • Must be able to communicate well verbally

  • Must be able to work nights and weekends

  • Must be able to cope with potentially demanding members

  • Must be able to handle emergency and crisis situations

Adult Center

Reports to:  Director of Adult and Social Services/Adult and Social Services Social Worker


Job duties and responsibilities:

  • Assess client needs and create/facilitate recreation and socialization activities

  • Participate in intake and assessment process as needed

  • Assist in Creation of and updating individualized treatment plans

  • Provide task supervision to staff and volunteers

  • Communicate with family members of clients as needed

  • Coordinate music therapy and entertainment professionals

  • Coordinate exercise program with staff from the MIYJCC fitness center

  • Assist with creating monthly activity/menu calendar

  • Engage with clients’ aides as needed during the program to ensure client safety

  • Assist with outreach efforts and production of printed program materials

  • Collaborate with department staff to ensure provision of highest quality services



  • Therapeutic recreation, social work or related degree and current certification required

  • Excellent oral and written communication Skills

  • Knowledge of Word, Excel and Outlook

  • Superior relationship building and communications skills

  • Experience in provision of quality service and customer relations

  • Good critical, creative thinking and decision-making skills

  • Must demonstrate the aptitude and willingness to be a visible and active team


General Tasks of All MIYJCC Staff 

  • Promote and implement the Core Values of the Jewish Community Center 

  • Participation in required staff meetings and staff training seminars 

  • Participation in agency-wide programs and program committees, as assigned 

  • Active involvement, as a supervisee, in the supervision process 

  • Support the mission of the MIYJCC

  • Other tasks appropriate to MIYJCC staff, as assigned
