American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Blended Learning

Must be 15+ years old by completion of course

This course prepares you to respond to emergencies in an aquatic environment and trains you in CPR/AED and First Aid. This certification is nationally recognized and accepted across the country. This is a blended learning course that combines online learning with in-water sessions. This allows participants to complete all the eLearning information and view the videos for skills prior to the in-water sessions.

Pre-Test

  • Swim 300 yards, continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both, but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used

 

  • Tread water for 2 minutes, using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under their armpits.

     

  • Complete a timed event in 1 minute and 40 seconds: ■■ Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. Swim goggles are not allowed. ■■ Surface dive, feet-first or headfirst, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object. ■■ Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface to breathe (or to get a breath). ■■ Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

​ Due to regulations enforced by the Nassau County Department of Health, any lifeguard working in Nassau County is required to pass an additional lifeguard exam. We will be reviewing the Nassau County requirements and testing curriculum at the conclusion of the course.

American Red Cross Lifeguard Recertification Course

If you are already a lifeguard, but your certification is about to expire, you only need to take a recertification course.

Must attend both sessions in your session.

Pre-test required (done on first day.)

Pre-Test Cost: $25 (done on first day, non-refundable)

Upon successful completion of the pre-test,

registration balance is due:  $175

Instructor Level Courses
American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor

If you are an American Red Cross certified Lifeguard and are interested in training others in life-saving techniques, you can become an American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Instructor. This course will help you teach skills that may save a life, gain terrific work experience as an aquatics professional and earn money while you help people learn valuable skills. Must attend all sessions.

Cost — Member Discounted Fee: $425   Class Fee: $465

Upon registration you will receive a link to register with the American Red Cross where an additional $35 fee will be charged. You must be registered with both the Mid-Island Y JCC and the American Red Cross before you are eligible for the pre-test.

American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Re-Entry Course

The purpose of the American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Crossover/Re-Entry course is to recognize the training of previous Water Safety instructors and other qualified swimming instructors, and to allow these individuals to participate in a modified instructor course to become current American Red Cross Water Safety instructors.

Qualifications:

- Former American Red Cross Water Safety Instructors whose certifications have expired for no longer than 2 years are eligible to take this course     

- Current Certified Swimming Instructors from other nationally recognized organizations

6:00-10:00 pm  •  Must attend all sessions

CPR/AED For Professional Rescuers & Healthcare Providers

As an EMT, firefighter, athletic trainer or lifeguard, it is your duty to respond to cardiac or breathing emergencies until more advanced medical personnel can take over. From assessing needs and making decisions to providing care, this program provides the skills you need through discussion; video and hands-on training based on real-life rescue scenarios. This course covers adults, children and infants.

There are no prerequisites.
