About the K.I.S.S. Center |
What is The K.I.S.S. Center?
The K.I.S.S. (Kids In Special Services) Center at the Mid-Island Y Jewish Community Center was established in 2004 to provide a comprehensive range of programs and services for children through adults with developmental disabilities. It is funded by a grant from the J.E. and Z.B. Butler foundation as well as parent fundraisers and community contributions.
How did the program start?
The KISS Center was the result of 5 parents who wanted a sense of community as well as recreational programs and social opportunities for their children. The K.I.S.S. Center began with one after school recreational sports class with 6 children and now has grown to over 200 children and teens.
Who does The K.I.S.S. Center serve?
Children and teens with developmental disabilities including but not limited to those with learning disabilities, language delay, ADHD, Asperger’s and Autism Spectrum disorders.
We offer a high staff to child ratio, allowing for more individualized attention in our programs. An intake is required prior to registering to ensure appropriate placement in the class. Children are grouped by age and ability.
Our wonderful staff is comprised of NYS certified teachers and teacher’s assistants with a many years experience teaching children and teens with disabilities. Dedicated teen workers and volunteers add a special component to our programs and receive specialized training. Peer models are utilized in most programs and provide our participants with positive social interactions.
What programs do you offer?
Children and teens participate in a wide variety of activities with our exceptional staff members to guide them to success. Adaptations are made when needed to facilitate active participation.
In addition to quality programming, participants have many opportunities to socialize with peers and build life long friendships. Beyond just fun and games, our programs bring opportunities for physical fitness, increased self-confidence, socialization and cooperation!
Do you have to be a member of the Mid-Island Y JCC to obtain K.I.S.S. Center services?
We have members as well as non-members who use our services. Our services are offered to all individuals regardless of race, religion or ability to pay.

Sunday Social Skills Programs: |
Social Skills are a crucial component in everyday activities. Children who do not have the ability to interact in a positive and meaningful way oftentimes can feel isolated and frustrated, which may lead to an increase in maladaptive behaviors. Lack of social skills may lead to missed opportunities for diverse experiences. In order for children with social skills deficits to succeed, it is essential that they are provided with the support necessary to allow them to develop self-esteem, confidence and friendships in a structured and safe environment.
Social skills must be broken down into their component parts and presented in a concrete, systematic, and repetitive manner. Our program is based on the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). The program begins with a participant intake and questionnaire, which allows us to determine the skills that your child already possesses as well as those in need of strengthening and/or development. Documents such as IEPs (Individualized Education Plans) and BIPs (Behavior Intervention Plans) help us to develop short term goals and objectives. Once we have a comprehensive understanding of your child’s needs, we develop a plan to meet them. Throughout the program, we continually evaluate and monitor your child in order to ensure that progress is being made.
The following are some examples of the social skills targeted for intervention:
Sessions may include:
We offer social skills programs on Sundays for children and teens ages 3-18. In addition to social skills programs, we offer many other recreational programs such as Arts and Crafts, Dance, Music, Soccer, Swim, and Sensory-based activities.

Vacation Respite: |
Families who have a child with special needs often experience ongoing stress. Because of the additional care required by a child with special needs, families identify respite care as a basic need, with the need increasing as the child gets older. Families who report less stress usually are the recipients of formal support services, such as respite care. Respite care for families who have a child with special needs helps maintain family stability and may provide opportunities for the child to participate in special activities.
Our innovative vacation respite programs are carefully designed to meet the individual needs of the participants. A participant intake and questionnaire are required prior to registering for the program. Children who are in mainstream or inclusion classes may participate with their typical peers in collaboration with our Children's Services Department. Children who may need more individualized attention and supervision may be placed in our self-contained classes. Programs begin at 10am and run until 3:30pm. A typical day includes arts and crafts, music, gym, swim, sensory based activities and specialty programs such as yoga, karate and more!
To learn more about our vacation respite programs, please see our current Chailights magazine, located on the front page!
