Staff
Elissa Friedman, ACSW, LCSW
Ext. 335
Director
Elissa received her BSW from the University at Albany and went on to receive her
MS in Social Work from Columbia University. She began her career as a staff social worker and went on to become a social work supervisor in the Juvenile Rights Division of the Legal Aid Society. In 1999 she joined the staff of the Mid – Island Y Jewish Community Center as a per diem social worker. In 2006 she became the Director of the Plainview-Old Bethpage Neighborhood NORC program and has worked tirelessly to develop supportive and relevant programs for older adults. In 2008 Elissa became the Director of Family and Adult Services where she oversees:
• Family and Parent Education
• Older adult programming
• Frail senior programming
• Two Neighborhood NORC programs POB CARES and Project PACE
• The C2C program at the Mid Island Y
• The Shabbat Respite Alzheimer’s program
• Social work internship program
Stephanie Ginsberg, LMSW

Assistant Director
Stephanie received her BA in Judaic Studies from the University at Albany and received her MSW from the Wurzweiler School of Social Work at Yeshiva University. She began her career as the assistant program director at Surprise Lake Camp and then in 2003 became the Director of Children’s and Youth Services at the Shaw JCC in Akron, Ohio. Upon her return to NY in 2005, Stephanie became the Program Director at Hofstra Hillel while simultaneously working as a Family Educator at the Sid Jacobson JCC. In 2007 her career took her to the UJA-Federation of NY, first as a fundraiser and then as the program executive for SYNERGY. In June 2010, her journey took another turn when she joined the staff of the Mid-Island Y JCC as the Assistant Director of Family and Adult Services.
Beverly Gilbert

Assistant Director
Beverly received her BA in Education and her MS in Health and Physiology. She started out teaching High School in NYC before starting her family. After moving to Long Island, she started working at the Mid-Island Y JCC, developing the toddler/mommy & me classes, and then worked in a variety of departments, including; Children’s Services, Jewish Education and Cultural Arts. In addition to all of this, she worked at Camp Kindering, finally serving a the Camp Director for three summers. Beverly then ended up as the Assistant Director of Family and Adult Services.
Sharon Finkelstein

Administrative Assistant
Sharon began her career in the non-profit world 24 years ago, first working at what is now Variety Child Learning Center before moving onto JASA (Jewish Association for Services for the Aged). Just shy of 8 years ago Sharon joined the staff of the Mid-Island Y JCC in an administrative capacity where she helps coordinate all aspects of the Family and Adult Center.
Doreen McIlwaine
Ext. 326
Program Coordinator
Doreen graduated from Empire State College with an Associates Degree in Human and Community Services. She is currently finishing up her Bachelor’s Degree and plans to pursue a Master’s Degree in Social Work. Doreen recently received her advanced dementia certification through DCPA. She is also trained in Applied Behavior Analysis and is skilled in behavior management and curriculum development. Doreen has a background in nursing and early childhood education which compliments her other skills. Here at the Y she works in both the K.I.S.S Center and the Shabbat Respite programs serving as the Program Coordinator.
Facilities
The Family and Adult Center utilizes a multitude of programming spaces to accommodate the variety of programs and activities that take place. Our Shabbat Respite program and discussion groups are housed in multi-purpose spaces that are set-up to accommodate the seniors who attend. The bright and airy art room is home to a variety of watercolor, beading, and eco-friendly art classes. The large JCC multi-purpose room houses our senior clubs, our lunch and learn series and a mix of other programs, including psychic night and educational lectures and our support groups meet in classrooms that are set-up to provide a safe and confidential space for clients.
