American Red Cross Training Programs
The JCC will be hosting a series of lifeguard training classes. If you are interested in becoming a lifeguard you must pass the pretest which will be given on the first scheduled class: Pre-Test cost $25.
Pre-Test Skills Requirements
- Swim 12 laps/300 yards of the pool with good form and breathing. You must use front crawl, breastroke or a combination of both. Goggles are allowed
- Tread water for 2 minutes using only your legs. Keep your hands under your armpits.
- Complete a timed event in 1 minute 40 seconds or less. Start in the water, swim 20 yards without goggles. Surface dive to retrieve a 10 pound brick from a depth of 7-10 feet. Return to the starting point on your back, while holding the brick with both hands. Your face must be at or near the surface.

Lifeguard Recertification Courses
If you are already a lifeguard but your certification is about to expire then you only need to take a recertification course. You will need to be able to complete the above mentioned pre-test. Cost $200

CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Healthcare Providers
As an EMT, Firefighter, Athletic Trainer or Lifeguard, it is your duty to respond to cardiac or breathing emergencies until more advanced medical personnel can take over. From assessing needs and making decisions to providing care, this program provides the skills you need through discussion; video and hands-on training based on real-life rescue scenarios. This course covers adults, children and infants. There are no prerequesites. Cost $125
CPR/FPR Recertification Courses
If you have already taken CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer but your certification is about to expire you can take one of the recertification courses listed below. Cost $50.
CPR/AED Recertification November: Sunday 11/5 11-3 pm
Water Safety Instruction Courses: If you are a proficient swimmer, you can become an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor. This course will help you teach skills that may save a life, gain terrific work experience as an aquatics professional, earn money while you help people learn valuable skills. In addition you will learn organizational and presentation skills that will help you in any career and make a difference in people’s lives. Whether you want to splash around with kids and teach them to swim, help children and adults refine their strokes or teach diving safety techniques, you can do it as an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor.
Minimum age of 16. Fundamentals of Instructor Training Course (FIT). Demonstrate swimming skills consistent with the Stroke Performance Charts, Level 4, by swimming the following strokes:
- Front Crawl - 25 yards
- Back Crawl - 25 yards
- Breaststroke - 25 yards
- Elementary backstroke - 25 yards
- Sidestroke - 25 yards
- Butterfly - 15 yards
- Maintain position on back for 1 minute in deep water (floating or sculling)
- Tread water for 1 minute
Fees: Member: $475 Non-member: $500
Upon registration you will receive a link to register with the American Red Cross where an additional $35 fee will be charged. You must be registered with both the Mid-Island Y JCC and the American Red Cross before you are eligible for the pre-test.
